The GFASC symbol
ICHTHUS = FISH
Jesus Christ Son of God, Savior!
The symbol of the Great Family of the Sacred Heart includes a heart, a fish centrally placed within the heart, and the initials GFASC. The Heart is symbolic of the Heart of Christ.The Fish is a symbol of the Eucharist, reminding us of the many times Jesus fed the crowds with fish and bread. It was one of the symbols the early Christians used to identify themselves to one another, especially during the period of persecution when Christianity was illegal and they had to live their faith in secret and with much prudence. If they were discovered they were brought to trial and condemned to death. It was the Eucharist which sustained these first Christians and gave them the courage and strength to profess their faith in Jesus. The time of the persecutions lasted from the end of the first century until 313 AD, when Constantine proclaimed religious freedom to the Christians.The word "fish” in Greek is (ICHTHUS), each letter of the word being the first initial of the name of Christ under the title of JESUS CHRIST, SON OF GOD, SAVIOR!
