In June 2011 Mother Clare Millea, Superior General, made a six-day visit to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, along with Sr. Miriam Cunha Sobrinha, Provincial Superior of San Paulo, and Sr. Maureen Martin, Provincial Superior of the United States. Two Apostle nurses from the San Paulo Province, Sr. Matilde Ranzan and Sr. Maria Emilia Bueno, have been there for two months assisting the Franciscan Friars of Divine Providence, a Brazilian congregation we have been collaborating with for ten years in health care ministry in Brazil. The Franciscans and the Apostles are taking the first steps toward opening a mobile clinic which will offer health services in the remote mountainous areas of Haiti.
Eighteen months have passed since the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010, which at least for a time attracted the world’s attention to the 10 million Haitian inhabitants, 90 per cent of whom live below the poverty line.
Today, despite the many charitable efforts of the Church and other organizations, little has changed for the better. One million people still live in emergency tents under the continual threat of cholera, tuberculosis, and hunger, which daily claim the lives of many, especially children and the elderly. Only unfailing faith and hope in God’s promises and in the generosity of others save the Haitian people from desperation.
The face of the suffering Jesus is before our eyes in the faces of innocent people enduring enormous trials. We are left with the certainty that the Sacred Heart is calling the Apostles, too, to bring the loving touch of his divine Heart to that land. Pray with us for the people of Haiti and for our sister missionaries.
